When I was making this piece I had in mind a shell-like form. It’s different from most of my work because of its relentless movement straight up the piece in regular columns. Yet the movement of the glaze is in the opposite direction, slowly dripping and swirling around the chunky parts, making an interesting antidote to the almost martial movement of the forms. I was very happy with how the glazes turned out on this piece. With this glaze combination, I always get some of those blue tones, but sometimes not as much as I would like. Though there are no blue colorants in any of the glazes used on this piece, I believe the blues are because of the presence of titanium dioxide in one of the glazes. When I get the relative amounts of the various glazes just right, it creates this lovely “titanium blue” effect. You can see this also on Outcroppings and Parallelogram 3.
