This is an early piece that features the deep relief that I get by cutting through the wall and moving the clay. This one, and its companion piece, An Ocean of Ice, were finished around the same time. Both, however, were done before I started moving the cut parts of the clay both to the inside and to the outside. So what you see here is the thrown form, with parts pushed in. Now, by pushing the clay in both directions, not only do I get more depth in the relief, but I also alter the thrown form. So now when I throw a piece, I’ll throw a bit narrower, knowing that it will become wider after the alterations are made. My pieces now have an irregular edge. I do like the elegance of the thrown forms, and both of these pieces are old favorites.
